It feels weird continuing this series! But I would feel even worse if I started something again and didn’t finish it again!
Day 16 – A song that’s a classic favorite
Toploader – Dancing in the Moonlight
This song plays during the movie “A Walk to Remember” when Landon brings Jamie to the border between North and South Carolina so she can be in two places at once! I cry!
In all seriousness, I don’t have any other commentary for this song other than – it’s fun! The opening riff gets me hyped up! I can’t listen to the chorus without singing along! It’s a classic favorite, if you will!
Honorable mentions: Bonnie Tyler – Total Eclipse of the Heart (I’m a little embarrassed to admit that I didn’t truly appreciate this song until I watched the hilarious literal music video – but I turned around ha ha ha)
Day 17 – A song you’ll sing a duet with someone on karaoke
Ariana Grande – The Way (feat. Mac Miller)
Do I have the range of Ariana Grande? Absolutely not! Does it hurt my throat to try and hit those high notes? Absolutely! It’s worth it!
Related: I’ve also danced along to The Way on Just Dance! Try doing both at the same time, then collapse from lack of oxygen!
Honorable mentions: I Won’t Say I’m in Love from Hercules (and another Ariana Grande shoutout), AAA – 出逢いのチカラ (someday I’ll find someone to do this with me!)
Day 18 – A song from the year you were born
Spin Doctors – Two Princes
I don’t have any specific emotional attachment to this song – I just think it’s funky!
This also feels like a great place to shout out one of my favorite podcasts, Punch Up The Jam, and the fun episode they did on this song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0m9_v7iGcY
Honorable mentions: None! I’m not going down the gigantic rabbit hole of trying to choose another song from 1993! You can’t make me!
Day 19 – A song that makes you think about life
Arctic Monkeys – A Certain Romance
I was so obsessed with this song back in middle school that I themed an entire MySpace layout around it! Remember MySpace?
There’s a snarky pessimism to this song that I’ve carried with me for a long, long time. Different lines resonate with me at different points in my life (“Just ’cause he’s had a couple of cans he thinks it’s all right to act like a dickhead“, anyone?), but maybe it’s just the general sense of “who cares about this all, anyway?” that really sticks with me. Nothing matters! Capitalism! What’s the point!
I’ve tried really hard to shake this mindset recently, but even between meditation sessions (what?) and repeating my mantas (who are you?), it’s nice to let this song (and that guitar solo! whew!) wash over me once in a while.
Honorable mentions: Motion City Soundtrack – LG FUAD (I’m speaking figuratively, of course)
Day 20 – A song that has many meanings to you
Mac Miller – Stay
I’ll tell everyone my theory of the three perspectives to this song: listen to it once as a love song to Ariana Grande, again as a sad retrospective after their breakup, and finally, one last time, knowing that he’s passed away since recording this song. Then cry!
Honorable mentions: King Princess – Talia (I was at a music festival, very excited to see King Princess, and my boyfriend left to watch another act right before this song came on. I became embarrassingly emotional! Don’t tell anyone that I cried at a King Princess show!)
