30 Day Song Challenge, Week 2/6

I said this would be weekly, right? Oops!

Day 6 – A song that makes you want to dance
Carly Rae Jepsen – Want You In My Room

I’ve been to many, many concerts, but my favorite by far was seeing Carly Rae Jepsen at the House of Blues last summer on her Dedicated tour! It was the perfect trifecta of an energetic performer with catchy songs and a great crowd. At one point, my boyfriend asked a group of guys in front of us if I could slide in front of them for a better view, and they insisted on letting both of us cut in front of them! How thoughtful!

Though I felt like I knew her discography back to front before the concert, this song took me by surprise when performed live. The lyrics are very playful and great to sing at your friends at the top of your lungs while pointing and sliding and generally feeling the music.

Honorable mentionsWhitney Houston – I Wanna Dance with Somebody (OF COURSE), La Roux – Tigerlily (tell me that you don’t want to dance after hearing that opening, c’mon), No Suits – William Foe (I may or may not have bopped to this while cleaning the kitchen the other night)

Day 7 – A song to drive to
m-flo loves Bennie K – Taste Your Stuff

During my J-pop phase, I thought this was the perfect album opening song. It starts off slowly, then builds up bit by bit until the chorus finally hits, and it hits hard!

I especially love that, like many other m-flo songs, the English lyrics make sense! You, reader, may not have any idea of how rare that is, at least during this era of J-pop! In this specific case, I like that the English lyrics accurately represent the hype of this song!

Honorable mentionsCarly Rae Jepsen – Let’s Get Lost (baby, let’s take the long way home!)

Day 8 – A song about drugs or alcohol
Oasis – Cigarettes and Alcohol

I was extremely excited to see Liam Gallagher perform this live at Boston Calling before everything got cancelled! That is all! I don’t want to talk about it any more!

Honorable mentionsCarly Rae Jepsen – No Drug Like Me (for the CRJ three-peat!), Franz Ferdinand – Ulysses (I used to genuinely be afraid that my parents could hear my listen to this in my room)

Day 9 – A song that makes you happy
Toploader – Dancing in the Moonlight

Who among us can listen to this song without breaking a smile and bopping along?

(Ironically, I first heard this song as part of the soundtrack to the movie “A Walk to Remember. It’s played for all of 10 seconds during one of the movie’s few happy moments – when Landon brings Jamie to the border of North and South Carolina? I think? so that she can be in two places at the same time! I cry!)

Honorable mentionsPassion Pit – Little Secrets (I feel alive and I feel it in me, up and up I keep on climbing!)

Day 10 – A song that makes you sad
ZONE – Secret Base

This pick (along with one of my honorable mentions) is definitely a carry-over from my recent trip to Japan!

I listened to this song a lot during my initial J-pop phase, but it came back to me years later while watching the very sad anime Ano Hana with my boyfriend. I had obviously never thought much about the lyrics until seeing them written out in subtitles during the show’s closing credits – Oh my god, is this song about a dead person?

Honorable mentionsTaylor Swift – Soon You’ll Get Better (linking this one to her One World performance, for obvious reasons), Remioromen – 3月9日 (1 Litre of Tears fucked me up for life), Glass Animals – Youth (I enjoyed this song a lot before reading the lyrics, and now I can’t look at it the same way)
